Winchester City Council is looking to appoint a temporary ecologist/biodiversity officer for a 2 year contract, to help protect and enhance the wealth of international, national and locally important habitats and species within the district.

We are looking for a knowledgeable, effective and enthusiastic person with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.

Working within the Landscape and Open Spaces team, you will provide ecological advice  and support to development management and developers on the ecological implications of proposed developments, contribute to the provision of new council housing and the maintenance of existing housing stock (including undertaking Phase 1 habitat surveys), providing advice and support to Strategic Planning and writing and implementing management plans which benefit biodiversity on Winchester City Council owned land.  

The successful applicant will be able to prioritise work, enjoy the challenges of securing biodiversity gain, have a positive approach to work and a particular desire to champion the rich wildlife resource of the Winchester District. It is essential you work well with others but also independently and manage your time effectively. Ideally the successful applicant will have both land management and planning ecology experience, although training will be provided if required.

You will have a degree-level education in a related subject and likely to be a member of a Professional Body such as CIEEM (or be eligible for membership).


This is a full time 2 year contract based at our Council Offices in the centre of Winchester.

You must be able to meet the travel requirements of the post.
